For winter driving, its ideal if you can actual winter tires. That's probably the best safety features you can get. Of course, also drive slower, especially in the beginning part of the winter because you're not used to driving on ice. Always carry stuff in the car in case you're doing long distance traveling.
When you talk about hypothermia, the first kind of sensation in hypothermia is you get goose bumps. The second sensation you get is uncontrollable shivering. And the third sensation is when you stop shivering. If you're in a cold environment and you stop shivering it can be very dangerous.
Things that can happen before hypothermia, include the progression to frostbite. Your skin starts turning white. That's the blood vessels constricting. The next step is frostbite, in which the skin starts turning crystal white with a glassy appearance. Once you get to that point, then you should seek medical advice and get that extremity warmed up very quickly.
